Fundamentally there are two different ways of projecting an image. Firstly there is front projection, where the image is projected onto a surface which reflects the light back to the viewer. Secondly we have rear projection, where the image is projected onto the rear surface of a translucent material which transmits the light.
In both cases the light source is a projector using a lens to project and focus the light onto the screen surface.
