Screen size is usually specified using the diagonal measurement, in inches (like a TV set). In order to calculate the width and height it is necessary to know the screen format.
There are now a number of screen aspect ratios i.e. the relative proportion of the rectangular screen.
The ratios between width:height:diagonal for these formats are:
| Original video and PC (e.g. XGA [1024 x 768]): | 4:3:5 |
| Some CAD displays (e.g. SXGA [1280 x 1024]): | 5:4:6.4 |
| Video widescreen (e.g. HD [1920 x 1080]): | 16:9:18.3 |
| Computer widescreen (e.g. WUXGA [1920 x 1200]): | 16:10:18.9 |
| 35 mm slide: | 3:2:3.6 |
