FAQ - Supernova XL

Frequently asked questions about dnp Supernova XL

  • What is the biggest size you can make?

The size limitation is 5.1m [201”] in width and 3.0m [117”] in height. The maximum size in 16:10 is 220” and the maximum size in 16:9 is 230”.

  • What is the minimum Supernova XL you offer?

We start offering Supernova XL when the screen height is higher than 1524mm [60”]. Below this height Supernova Core can be used.

  • What is the difference to Supernova Core?

The basic principle is the same – the screen material is tensioned with rubber rings through holes in the edges of the screen material and connected to studs in the frame. On Supernova XL the screen sheet comprises two lanes of screen material with a joint-line in the center whereas the screen sheet on Supernova Core is one lane and no joint-line. On the bigger Supernova XL screens there are support bars on the backside to ensure the frame is perfectly rectangular. The shipping box is bigger but the screen ships basically the same way, unassembled for installation on-site.

  • What is the difference to Supernova Infinity?

The main difference is that Supernova XL doesn’t have the rigid backboard and that the image area is one big roll of screen material opposite Supernova Infinity where the screen comprises multiple screen panels that are put together to make the image area. Secondly the Supernova XL doesn’t have a support structure to hang on the wall. Supernova XL is limited in size whereas Supernova Infinity is available in infinite size.

  • What are the frame options?

We offer 4 different frame options: “Black Sand” black powder coating, “Black Velvet” classic black flock surface, “Silver Alu” silver anodized and “White Sand” white powder coating. On the non-black versions there is an extra black velvet inner frame for projector overscanning.

  • What is the difference between ‘Black Sand’ and ‘Black Velvet’?

‘Black Sand’ comprises a powder coating with very small sand particles for a matte low reflection surface. ‘Black Velvet’ is the frame covered with a traditional black fiber tape (flocktape) for maximum anti-reflection.

  • What are the frame dimensions?

The width of the Supernova XL frame varies with the color options. The ‘Black Sand’ and ‘Black Velvet’ frames are 80 mm [3.1”] wide whereas the ‘Silver Alu’ and ‘White Sand’ frames are 100 mm [3.9”] wide. The extra 20 mm [0.8”] on the silver and white frames is due to an additional inner black velvet masking frame for projector overscanning.

  • Can I get the Supernova XL with Supernova 23-23 screen material?

This is not possible. Supernova XL comes with Supernova 08-85 screen material only.

  • How many persons do we need to install the screen?

You need two persons to assemble the screen. We recommend assistance from a third person when installing the bigger sizes of Supernova XL due to the size and weight of the screen.

  • What is the weight of the Supernova XL?

That, of course, depends on size. A 220”-230” screen weighs approximately 50-55 kg [110-120 lbs] as an example. Please see the datasheet for specific weights for the different standard sizes.

  • Does it matter what way the screen sheet is installed?

Due to the nature of the advanced optical screen material there may be a slight difference in color uniformity depending on the rotation of the screen sheet. At the final inspection at the factory we identify what the best orientation is based on your installation scenario. This is indicated by a small “TOP” label on the foil roll. As the light-scene on the installation site is different than the conditions at the factory this may change on-site but, in most cases, it will not.

  • How visible is the jointline?

This very much depends on the eyes that see and the content on the screen. The jointline is maximum 0.3mm [300 microns] wide, hence it is almost invisible from normal viewing distances with normal visual acuity. The jointline appears as a very thin dark line, which, of course, is more visible with bright content than dark content.

  • Can I tilt the screen forward to improve the vertical viewing?

Yes, this is possible and an effective way of improving vertical viewing. Keep in mind the projector position when tilting the screen. Vertical shift is good to have. The screen material will sag slightly in the center, varying with screen height/width and tilting angle, but nothing that should affect the picture significantly. Please contact us for tilting solution details.

  • Can I hang the screen in wires from the ceiling?

Yes, this is possible. Please contact us for wire hanging solution details.

  • Can I use the screen for rental and staging?

We do not recommend the screen to be used for continuous up/down installations. The screen is designed to be installed once but can easily be disassembled and re-assembled a good number of times if you are careful. We do not recommend it to be used outdoors.

  • How big a projector do you recommend for Supernova XL?

This depends on screen size, ambient light environment and screen usage. A 220” 16:9 screen (16ft x 9ft) will normally work well with a 15K lumens projector but this has to be calculated specifically for every project.

  • Is the screen locked to the wall for safety- and anti-theft precaution?

As standard the bottom of the screen is attached to the wall with strong magnets. If you need further fixation please contact us for a custom solution.
